Now in its third iteration, it sits amid an increasing trend of versatile jackets-cum-jerseys such as the Castelli Gabba that are intended for protection from the elements during intense efforts, rather than offering thick deep winter protection during more passive riding. Being a fan of Raphas products, particularly their Pro Team range, its came as little surprise that I found their Pro Team Training Jacket desirable at first sight. My test model was a gun-metal grey with Raphas reflective pink accents located on the lower sections of the front and back, the sleeve cuffs and around the neck area. Other reflective details include the iconic Rapha armband on the right arm, midway up the bicep. While the jackets grey can appear a little drab during daylight, it seems to flourish in lower light conditions. Car and bike lights tended to bounce off the reflective features, backing up Raphas claims of 360 degree visibility. So, for my part the jacket looked great but how does it perform on the road? My first outing wearing it was a cold, 3-hour training ride, punctuated midway by a heavy rain shower. I hadnt packed a rain cape and was anxious how the jacket would cope given its billed as water resistant, not waterproof. The jackets rear utilises a DWR treated yet stretchy and breathable fabric, ensuring no overheating during hard efforts. The front is constructed using a multi layered panel, providing protection from the elements. This compromises a Polartec Powershield softshell fabric and perforated membrane for windproofing and a DWR water repellency treatment, which formed rain into beads that were deflected off the surface, keeping me warm and dry in showers. Much like Castellis Gabba/Perfetto jackets, continuous torrential rain will get through, so packing an extra rain jacket is advisable, but warmth remains due to the excellent windproof qualities. For showers, damp, drizzly weather and temperatures ranging from 0-15 the Pro Team Training Jacket will be up to the challenge. Thankfully that makes this a jacket designed for hard efforts, say chain gangs, high-tempo training rides or even racing. In keeping with the Pro Team line, the cut is slimline, hugging the body like a well fitted jersey with no discernible flapping from the wind, feeling more like a long sleeve jersey. When initially trying on the jacket, the fit may feel way off the mark as the front lifts so high on the body, but is very well suited to a racey position on the bike. For me, at 185cm and 69 kg, a size medium fits me like a glove. It is often said that, once worn, the best kit is forgotten by a rider, and Raphas Pro Team Training Jacket certainly lives up to this old adage. The rear pocket space is ample deep and stretchy. There are zipped valuables pockets located low down on the jackets front and another within the right hand rear pocket. As always with Rapha products, the Pro Team Training Jacket is high on both quality and price. However, the undoubted calibre and durability of this third generation garment means the premium price tag is justified.
