Many riders were as interested in stopping their opponents as they were in making it over the finish line. Riders like Giovanni Gerbi (known as Il Diavolo Rosso, the Red Devil) would go to any lengths to win. But for every villain there is, invariably, a hero. And Gerbis came in the form of Giovanni Cuniolo known as Manina, or little hand, because of his fondness for physicality in the sprints. Maninas and Gerbis rivalry was legendary brutal and beautiful in equal measure. Their fiercest battle was set for the 1909 Giro di Lombardia, known then as the Criterium dAutunno, or race of the falling leaves.
